Other Education

- the journal of educational alternatives

Was an online, platinum open access (free to read), academic journal, running from 2012 to 2022. It was considered a field leader. It had various substantive impacts for the benefit of the alternative education community during it’s time as an active publication. Some articles were read/downloaded many thousands of times. One article had more than 50k downloads via the Other Education website - an astonishing reach for a small independent journal - and many others reached a wide audience, in the thousands, around the globe.

Other Education served through the quality and nature of the work it published to enable and promote validation of alternative education as a viable and respectable academic sub-discipline of education as a social science, whilst also pushing the boundaries, towards and into other disciplinary areas, of how education operates academically. Thereby Other Education was cutting edge educational research as well as a specialist place to go to read work by scholars commited to this area of knowledge about education.

In due course the articles it published will be available here to download.

We featured peer reviewed articles, reports and opinion pieces, book reviews and more. We published two issues a year for a decade.

Here is what readers said:

“You can only find these kind of articles about education in Other Education - no one publishes the kinds of things you do.”

“Thank you for this brilliant journal - it means so much to me to engage with the work in Other Education. I feel at home.”

“Other Education has helped me feel that my PhD research had an academic home. It has been instrumental in helping me get my PhD”

“The existence of Other Education helped someone in a court room embroiled in a custody battle for her child. The judge asked “but does this educational method have an academic journal to support it?” and the lawyer (after consulting with the mother) said “Yes! The journal is called Other Education”. This influenced the judge. The children stayed with their mother, instead of being removed into care.”

The editorial team of Other Education has now moved on to other projects, but sincerely hopes that a new generation of scholars will take up the baton of publishing work of this kind.

The founding Editor of Other Education was Dr Helen E Lees (independent scholar, Italy). She was joined in 2021 by Dr Gina Riley (Hunter College, New York, USA) as co-editor. Assistant editors were Robert Hamm (independent scholar, Ireland), Maryam Valid (independent scholar, France), as well as valuable others. We had an editorial board of wonderful people interested in education done differently. Thank you everyone who participated in and enjoyed Other Education!

Our motto was…

open to be different…
