OTHER EDUCATION
the journal of educational alternatives

ISSN 2049-2162

Editor-in-chief: Helen E Lees, University of Stirling, UK

Editorial assistant: Robert Hamm, Sligo, Ireland

Most academic journals in the field of education focus on institutionalised forms of educational provision, throughout the life-course. Other Education looks at education differently. Our work as authors and readers, as well as editorially speaking, is to enable and enhance movement of education towards the democratic, the autonomous and the socially just. How this is done is, with us, open.

We operate as an international academic journal.

So, in line with a love of the democratic, our focus is the theory, philosophy and practice of educational alternatives. Educational alternatives signifies alternatives to mainstream practices of education and schooling – home schooling, home education, and de-schooling – and alternative approaches within mainstream practices of education and schooling – alternative conceptions and practices of schooling, democratic schools, student voice, student-centred education, and the like.

We consider that the work of scholars writing on educational alternatives is currently too dispersed amongst journals without our focus and vision to create concentrated conversations and the development of meanings on 'other' terms. We seek to provide a space that can remedy that aporia. Within this dedicated space to alternatives, in and of education, scholars can generate positive lines of new thought and challenging contributions to any sedimented status quo with force and support of a dedicated audience and editorial team. We also seek work that enhances and refines our understandings of relevant existing work, of which there is a great deal that currently sits without its due attention on ‘other’ terms of value. We don’t yet and perhaps never will – nor should - know what these other terms are but discussing attractive, ugly, difficult, simple, valuable, decidedly useless, weird, ordinary and interesting educational possibilities is a part of our remit. We are not just interested in the successful, the beautiful, the high status, the winners... We serve the marginal, the excluded, the poor, the different and those without a voice. As the journal evolves, so will our conversations… Join us. Publish with us.

We aim for the cumulative development of knowledge, understanding and scholarship on educational alternatives worldwide. Other Education seeks to become a focal point for such work and contribute to the visibility and quality of scholarship on educational alternatives; creating a step-change in mainstream reception of such work. The field of practice which will be the focus of contributions is potentially very large and the journal does not wish to create boundaries or limitations. The creativity of authors interested to develop conversations is valued both in terms of content but also new and experimental article formats and structuring. Other Education is currently an English language journal but if you wish to publish in another language please contact the editor to discuss. French, German, Italian are currently possible.

Other Contributions

Text in this section is not subject to peer review, beyond a decision by the editors. Articles, interviews, reports and overviews as well as any other ideas that people might wish to suggest can be published in the Other Contributions section in order to widen our knowledge and understanding of educational alternatives.

Contributions in this section, as with articles in the peer reviewed section, are the opinions of the authors and contributors entirely and not those of the editors or editorial board of Other Education.

We encourage anyone - academic or non academic - to suggest pieces for this section. The presentation does not have to follow standard academic conventions. We welcome different genres, topics and styles as well as content so long as it contributes to the wider aims of this section and the journal more generally.

We are particularly interested to hear from people working in or with:

  • NGOs
  • Charities
  • Schools
  • Out-of-school settings
  • Home education
  • Adult education settings
  • Journalism
  • Local action-for-change groups
  • and any other relevant parties, including academics.

Contributions in this section are between approximately 500 - 3000 words. Providing weblinks wherever possible is helpful. A contribution would normally be concerned with practical, political, social, artistic and academic initiatives of interest to the readership of Other Education.

Inclusion in this section is at the discretion of the editors, to whom an email can be directly sent as a submission enquiry.

Peer Review Process

Our review policy is to double-blind review each article. Submissions are judged by virtue of their original contribution to knowledge, rigour, neutral or justified perspective, interest and the quality of the writing. Articles are expected to be submitted without substantial spelling errors or inconsistencies in structure. Writing that is different, unusual, challenging and even strange is of course very welcome.

Reviews take on average 3 months to be secured and a further month to be fed back to the author.

Reviewers are recruited by virtue of their expertise and interest in the area of the article to be reviewed.

We are most grateful to our community of reviewers for the sharing of their knowledge, advice, time and energy towards the development of other education related scholarship.

Publication Frequency

Other Education publishes twice each year, around January and July.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of research.

Other Education is currently a 'platinum' journal without gold author processing charges (APCs) or green waits. We reserve the right to ask for a small APC where institutionally viable. We would never levy a charge to an individual author publishing without insitutional backing.

Archiving

This journal utilizes the LOCKSS system to create a distributed archiving system among participating libraries and permits those libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for purposes of preservation and restoration. More...
